Have you ever considered why Japan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia? In fact, Japan ranked as the third most-visited country in Asia, welcoming approximately 32.2 million tourists in 2019. From its rich cultural heritage to cutting-edge technology, Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity that enchants travelers. Here are some of the most cherished aspects of Japan that visitors often fall in love with.

Table of Contents
Polite and Hospitable People
The Japanese are celebrated for their exceptional politeness and hospitality, creating a warm and welcoming environment for visitors. Respect is a fundamental value taught from childhood, and public interactions are characterized by quiet courtesy.
Customer service is genuine and attentive in all settings, from convenience stores to luxury hotels. Surprisingly, tipping is considered rude, reflecting a focus on sincere service.
Japanese people have a deep appreciation for nature which is visible in their beautiful gardens. They have a concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) and strong environmental consciousness.
Rich Culture and Festivals
This country offers a rich blend of ancient traditions and contemporary influences. Its cultural heritage includes historic temples, traditional tea ceremonies, and vibrant festivals like Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri, featuring colorful floats, music, and dance.
The country also celebrates events such as the Sapporo Snow Festival and the Takayama Matsuri, each with unique traditions. Visitors can experience the charm of historic districts like Kyoto’s Gion, and enjoy festivals like Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri with its spectacular illuminated lantern floats.
Japanese pop culture, including anime, manga, J-pop, and video games, also has a massive global following and influences many around the world.
Natural Hot Springs (Onsen)

Onsen, or natural hot springs, have been a key part of Japanese culture for over 1,300 years. Originally valued for their healing properties and sacred qualities, they were once associated with nobility.
Today, onsens are popular spots for relaxation and socializing, with more than 25,000 across Japan. Visiting an onsen is a communal activity that helps people relax, relieve stress, and connect with family and friends.
However, if you do not have time to visit onsens, you can now enjoy hot springs at the comfort of your homes. Look for Onsen Harvest’s Sulfur Sets or Onsen box subscriptions and experience onsen at your home.
I personally love hot baths at home so I used this Onsen Bath Powder to relax and refresh, especially after a long, tiring day. You can watch the reason why on this video.
Stunning Landscapes
Mount Fuji, with its snow-covered peak, is a standout attraction in Japan. In spring, cherry blossoms create a peaceful setting, while autumn brings vibrant leaves and winter offers serene snow.
Away from the busy cities, traditional villages like Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa provide a look into a slower, historic way of life. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of these historic settlements and experience the harmony between nature and tradition.
Sophisticated Architecture
Japan’s architecture is a striking blend of historic shrines and temples alongside modern skyscrapers, particularly evident in areas like Tokyo’s Shibuya district. The country also boasts beautiful gardens designed for relaxation and reflection.
Kyoto is known for its stunning shrines and carefully crafted gardens that change with the seasons. This mix of traditional and modern elements, such as tea houses next to contemporary buildings, creates a unique and memorable experience.
Safety and Cleanliness
Cleanliness and well-organized public spaces in Japan are well-known. It’s also very safe with low crime rates, making it comfortable for both residents and visitors. Shintoism and Buddhism influence Japanese culture by emphasizing purity and cleanliness, such as washing hands before entering shrines.
Children learn about cleanliness early on through daily cleaning tasks at school. I experience this first hand because I teach English in elementary schools. Kids are taught to wash hands before eating, clean their own classroom and school.
People often take their trash home if bins are unavailable, and everyone is expected to keep their surroundings clean.
Traditional Arts

Japan has a rich artistic tradition, featuring ikebana (flower arranging), origami (paper folding), and traditional performing arts like kabuki and noh. The art includes ancient pottery, famous ceramics, and beautiful ink painting and calligraphy.
You can also see striking ukiyo-e paintings and woodblock prints, as well as minimalist designs that have influenced Western art. Modern Japanese comics, or manga, are also becoming popular worldwide. With such a wide variety of art forms, there’s something in Japanese art for everyone to enjoy.
Innovative Technology
Japan is celebrated for its cutting-edge technology that significantly enhances daily life. High-tech toilets exemplify this innovation with features like heated seats, bidet functions, noise-masking options, and self-warming seats.
Other impressive technologies include super-fast bullet trains that reduce travel time dramatically, and vending machines found on nearly every street, offering a variety of drinks and snacks.
Additionally, Japan boasts innovative solutions like underground bicycle garages for safety, automatic taxi doors, and touchscreen menus at upscale restaurants. With such a futuristic landscape, it’s no wonder that many dream of experiencing a day in this technologically advanced Japanese world.
Although, I would like to boast as much as I want to about Japan. This place is not perfect. Please do not be deceived the by advance and innovative technology they show on social media. I work in elementary schools yet they are very traditional and still use fax machines.
Shopping and Fashion
Japan’s shopping districts offer a wide range of experiences, from the trendy streets of Harajuku to the lively markets of Osaka.
Tokyo’s fashion scene is vibrant and often surprises visitors with its bold styles. Each street fashion style has its own name, such as ‘Lolita,’ which includes various substyles like gothic and sweet, and ‘Ganguro,’ known for its bright outfits and unique makeup.
Other popular styles include Gyaru, schoolgirl looks, glam rock, and traditional kimonos. Exploring the streets of major Japanese cities provides an exciting opportunity to spot these unique fashion trends and immerse oneself in the dynamic culture of Japanese street style.
Delectable Cuisine

Japanese cuisine is a big draw, featuring a variety of flavorful dishes like ramen, sushi, tofu, tempura, and sashimi. You can enjoy this food at mobile stands, historic ryotei, lively bars, seasonal river terraces, affordable chains, and themed restaurants with unique themes like ninja or manga.
The food is not only tasty but also beautifully presented, with casual spots like conveyor-belt sushi offering high-quality meals. Tea is the most popular drink, with its own traditional pouring ritual, while sake, made from fermented rice, is served with special ceremonies to enhance the dining experience.
Over to You
To wrap up, these features make Japan a captivating and diverse destination that attracts visitors from around the world. The blend of rich traditions, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture creates an unforgettable and lasting experience. If you were unsure about visiting Japan before, now is the perfect time to experience the magic for yourself!

August 25, 2024 at 7:31 AMI love visiting Japan and agree with what you’ve mentioned above. Also, it is now cheaper for us Australians to travel to Japan than to see our neighboring states. We are planning to visit for the winter season and hopefully stay for a month.
