keep your home declutter free

Decluttering is a little like losing weight. No matter how well you deal with your problem, in the beginning, it will keep coming back unless you understand the concept of maintenance.

If you have gone to the bother of decluttering your home and making it more minimalist, here are some more tips on how to keep your home free of clutter so that you never have to have another moment of panic as you view a home that looks like a bomb exploded there.

First, Define your style

Knowing what you want and setting goals for your home makes the organization so easy. Defining your styles sets limits to the things you want to take into your home. A messy home is usually hard to keep clean because there is so much unnecessary stuff in it. But if you know your style, you won’t even let stuff in because you know they’re just not you.

In addition to knowing your style is building habits. Small habits that support your goals of a happy and clear home are more powerful than doing deep cleaning once in a while.

Also, keeping a clutter-free home adds up to your happiness level and increases productivity.

Keep your home free of clutter

ways to a clutter-free home- regular maintenance

1. Regular Maintenance

This step refers to simply keeping things the way they are by tossing junk when you realize you don’t need it, instead of stashing it in a pile that needs to be sorted over and over.

Read your mail and immediately toss it, shred it, or deal with it and then put it into your file cabinet. There is no excuse for papers to be lying all over the floor, making it impossible to find them when you actually need them.

When you buy something from the store, put it where it is going to be kept immediately instead of setting bags on the floor and table. After the laundry comes out of the dryer, fold it and put it away immediately in the proper rooms and drawers.

When you have five spare minutes, use it to tidy and clean up anything lying around. This is how you keep any huge messes from forming again. Invest in organizers and containers to make your home neater.

2. Declutter Regularly

In addition to your regular maintenance, it is important to declutter on a regular basis. You can decide to have a serious decluttering day every three months, every six months, or just whenever your home starts looking like a junkyard.

Make it a serious appointment and tidy your home from top to bottom, giving yourself another clean slate to work with.

As for someone who is busy, time is essential. I understand not every one of us has ample time to declutter. In this case, you can rely on rubbish removal and collection services. Choose the right people for your task and get decluttering done. If you are from Melbourne, you could look up Rubbish Removal Clayton, Brighton, or Mentone area-based businesses. Sometimes, it’s good to leave it to the professionals.

3. Stop Buying Unnecessary Things

One of the biggest ways you can stop clutter in its tracks is to stop buying unnecessary things. By only allowing what you need to enter your home, you will cut down on the number of items you need to clear out later. Before you buy an item, think about whether you really need it, or if it is something you will regret at a later point in time.

Next time you buy something for your home, ask yourself if you really need it. Only bring things into your home that you are comfortable with and things that align with your values. This is a simple exercise but will keep your home clutter-free.

4. Have a place for everything

ways to a clutter-free home- Have a place for everything

Have you lost your keys again? Or You can’t find a pair of your socks? This is something we all can relate to and the solution for this is having a place for everything. This is something I learned from the experts like Gretchen Rubin and Marie Kondo.

Buy some plastic boxes for your shoes. Have a place for your keys and you’ll never lose them again. When organizing your clothes or documents, drawers and filing cabinets are very handy. Get some jars for your kitchen tools and for the pantry.

5. Get Everyone on Board

You can’t conquer clutter alone unless you live alone. If you are part of a family that lives together or have roommates of any kind, you will need to make everyone a part of the decluttering team.

Talk to everyone about your wishes to maintain a junk-free haven, and talk about the many benefits of living in a more minimalist way than you have been. Let the other household members know that everyone’s efforts will benefit everyone else and that you expect cooperation and teamwork.

6. Have a donation box

Keeping a donation box makes it easy to deal with the things you don’t need. When you find things, you think you’ll never use, just toss them into the donation box.

As the famous saying goes, someone’s trash can be someone’s treasure. Cliché as it may sound, but it’s a great reminder. When your box gets full, you just have to drop it at the donation center.

Reset your home at the beginning or end of the week.

Sunday is a reset day for me not just at home but for everything. It’s a great habit to cultivate if you want to keep your home clutter-free. Things you can do for a weekly reset are:

  • Meal planning
  • Cleaning all the flat surfaces
  • Tidying the kitchen up
  • Gather all trash for the week
  • Clean the fridge
  • Dust the cabinets
  • Clean the bathroom

Glad I came over this post. I am thinking of revamping my room when I get back from the UAE. I will be definitely taking note of this. And to take note of buying unnecessary things from now on.

I have recently strongly suggested that my husband spend 20 minutes each weekend working on a dev littering project. It’s not much but it does add up.

We try to declutter on a regular basis and not buy things we don’t need but somehow the things still find their way to us :D. I like the idea of having a donation box.

It’s hard to keep on top of things when you’re working so this week I’ve really let my house go. Luckily my husband has been on hand to help out. He’s always clearing up after my clutter.
