Where does self worth come from
Most people would like to live a life that is worthy. We like to increase our self worth but a handful of factors block us such as self-doubts, self-criticisms, lack of confidence, or pressure to conform. How do we cultivate self worth with all these factors that are in the way? Well, we have to understand where self worth comes from so we can cultivate it.
Self worth is not a quality we have or don’t. It’s actually a choice. Your self worth does not depend on other people’s acceptance or approval. It comes from you yourself. You decide your own worth, without judgment.
Don’t let other people determine your worth and don’t measure your worth using other people’s rulers. use your own tool of measurement. The pressure to please other people is hard to break but I am here to remind you to do things you love and be as authentic as you can be. Because that is where self worth comes from. Your worth as a person is not affected by people’s opinions nor your success or failures.
Why is self worth important?

In Brené Brown’s book The Gifts of Imperfection, she emphasized the importance of self worth and why everyone is placing much importance on it. It is because it improves our mental health and our decision-making skills. Making better decisions hugely impacts our lives. Our everyday actions are based on the decisions we make.
Without self worth, we won’t be able to survive our toxic environment. Without self worth, we won’t have the confidence to chase our dreams and try something new. Boosting your self worth is the key to improving your life. Living a happier and more fulfilling life boils down to believing in yourself and cultivating your self worth.

How to boost your self worth?
It takes practice and not miracles though to build and cultivate our worth. Here are some things you can begin doing right now to increase your self-worth:
1. Enjoy a new hobby
Your skillset is a big determination of your self-worth. The more you can do – and do well – the better you feel about yourself. That’s why you’ll want to consider adding to your list of hobbies or recreational activities. Find something that interests you, whether it’s playing some instruments, visiting cafes or museums, painting, writing, going to the gym, growing plants, the list goes on. The important thing is to find something you enjoy because the more you enjoy what you do in your life, the more you’ll also enjoy who you are as a person.
2. Take a class
As with hobbies, learning something new is a great way to add to your self-worth. It’s like a deposit into your knowledge bank. And when you fill your knowledge bank with information, you don’t just get to boost self-worth but also confidence in yourself. When you are confident, you can be best at what you do best.
There are plenty of options for this choice:
- Take a class at a local community college.
- Register for an online seminar.
- Take classes on online learning platforms such as Udemy, Skillshare, or Shaw Academy
- Look in the local newspaper for free classes in your area.
- Call your local school district. They offer inexpensive continuing education classes in almost every subject imaginable, including hobbies!
3. Read more books

Reading is a wonderful way to stimulate the mind. When you spark your imagination, new ideas emerge from the depths. Nothing builds self-worth like learning more about the world you live in! Maybe you’ve always wanted to be an inventor. If so, you can generate some ideas by researching and reading information about your ideas.
Hear out my story to spark some inspiration. I have always wanted to be a writer, but I did not enough confidence to start. Self-doubts creep in every time I try but everything changed when I started reading books.
I started with self-help books, and I stumbled upon Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic book. My mindset and views of myself changed after reading it. I was left inspired and motivated to pursue my passion for writing. The benefits I reaped from it? I have improved my writing skills, overcame my self-doubts, and made bold decisions such as building my own website.

There are a huge number of tools available that can assist you in mastering a new language. Learning new languages builds self-worth because it allows you to communicate on a completely different level with others.
Being able to speak a language other than your mother tongue gives you ample opportunity to improve the quality of your life. You get to travel and live in a foreign country. Make a lot of friends and find higher successes in your career.
5. Do something out of the ordinary

Take a chance, conquer a challenge, and step out of your comfort zone. These kinds of activities stretch you as an individual. Doing something you never imagined gives you a glimpse of your true potential.
Anything that boosts your self-confidence will also increase your self-worth, since they’re directly related. On the other hand, our self-worth becomes stagnant if we become arrogant and believe that we’ve accomplished all we can in life.
5. Practice Daily affirmations
Your mindset steers the wheel that determines your self-worth. The mind is a powerful thing and what you say, see and hear every day drives your thoughts. So why not wake up every day and declare these words. They have power and magic.
Align your thoughts in these positive affirmations to boost self-worth and you shall manifest your desired results. Trust in the truth that thoughts and things are the same stuff. Believe in these words, you have nothing to lose anyway.
You make a difference.
I am loved, cared and valued.
I am worthy and I deserve good things in this world.
I am full of ideas and creativity sparks in me.
My worth is priceless.
I am worthy of success and happiness.
I am a special person and there’s nobody else like me.
6. Eliminate self-criticism
It is almost impossible to boost your self-worth when you keep criticizing yourself. And if it’s your goal here is to enhance your worth and value, you need to substitute self-criticism with self-love and self-compassion.
You got to be kinder to yourself. When you are down and reached your rock bottom, it is usual to be self-critical, but this is not the time to be. Choose to be show kindness to yourself, forgive your mistakes, and avoid damaging your positive thoughts. Self-criticism doesn’t do anything good to you.

OVER TO YOU
Start each day by making the commitment to your success. After all, you are worthy of great things! Even if you have a hard time believing this, take action anyway because where the action is, emotions will follow.
Try something new, pick one of the topics from above, give it a shot and see for yourself how much of a difference it makes. Just remember the great words of Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
